Musical Features“Restless” creates an atmosphere true to its name. Over the three-and-a-half minute piece, the brisk tempo is unrelenting from start to finish. With only a few moments of repose, the performer is required to maintain a high level of momentum and groove while highlighting a lyrical melody. Using an ABA’B structure, the piece is straight-forward in its formal layout. O’Meara states the primary pattern at the beginning of the piece and uses this same pattern throughout the A-sections of the work. A lyrical second theme is utilized that hovers over a variation of the opening pattern, which leads back to the opening.
Technical FeaturesAll stroke types are utilized, but the constant combination of double laterals and single independent strokes make up the primary A-theme. Double vertical strokes in sixths in the right hand and double lateral strokes in the left hand are used for the B-theme. Performers must be able to play these stroke types at a brisk tempo, ½-note=112-126 in cut-time, throughout the entirety of the piece. However, the intervals stay within a fourth-sixth the entire piece.
