Musical FeaturesThese pieces can be played individually or together. The first piece has a beautiful flowing quality. The second piece picks up from this harmonic and rhythmic theme and introduces a stronger rhythmic and dynamic dramatic aspect. The third spiral, although sharing similarities in many respects has a more individual harmonic statement. All three share a flowing quality that can be characterized as French and jazz inspired regarding the contemporary harmonic and melodic flavor. This style can be found in many of Sammut’s popular pieces. A constant thread of notes in shifting time signatures is common to all of the movements.
Technical FeaturesThese are advanced level pieces including alternating, single independent and vertical strokes. Interlocking rhythms, single line with accented octaves or fourths are commonly found. He often will strengthen a melodic line with long stretches where the RH is playing in octaves. The third spiral ends with the performer playing using the handle on the bars for the final run. These pieces provide much satisfaction for the technical demands they place on the player. As a performer himself, all of his work can be classified as idiomatic on the instrument.
