Musical FeaturesAlthough it is atonal in nature, I would not characterize it as harshly dissonant. Both the calm rhythmic nature of the Andante and the lively rhythms of the changing meters in the Allegro make for interest on the part of the listener and performer. This piece is perhaps a welcome relief from either the traditional tonality found at this intermediate level or the fourth based nature of Mitchell Peters famous works. Yet the scope of this piece allows for a recital level piece that helps make the transition to more challenging works on every level.
Technical FeaturesThis piece is written in treble clef. It includes open and closed voiced chords and simple changing meters throughout. This is an idiomatic work that deserves a second look. This piece is also a welcome addition to the literature that includes a piano accompaniment. Especially noteworthy is that this piano part is easily learned by the accompanist, which can be a critical component when looking for pieces of this type.
