Why should I attend this seminar?
• Masterclasses and recitals offered by LHS and a stellar artist faculty can offer fresh perspectives on playing, and can provide inspiration and renewed motivation. Guest artists include Tom Burritt, Mike Burritt, Valerie Naranjo, Gordon Stout and Kevin Bobo.
• Leigh Howard Stevens, who leads the seminar, is a virtuoso marimbist, master educator, composer/arranger, author of the definitive book on four-mallet playing, patent-holder in marimba design and the creator of the "Stevens Technique" for playing marimba. You will have the opportunity for daily classes with someone who has been at the top of his field as a marimbist and clinician for more than 30 years.
• Motivation rather than current level of achievement is most important. You don't have to be an advanced player, or even an experienced 4-mallet player, to profit hugely from attending. You will have three weeks of uninterrupted marimba study to improve your weak points: One-handed rolls, memorizations, double lateral rolls, etc., with one-on-one techniue check-up.
• Seminar students will have performance opportunities in a final recital as well as in and around Ocean Grove.
• A behind-the scenes tour to the nearby Malletech marimba factory is included.
• With the seminar now in its 33rd year, Leigh Stevens has refined a top-notch syllabus for marimbists that maximizes the benefits to participants.
• Accommodations, provided at a lovely, sea-side Victorian Inn, offer ocean views, a pristine beach and a chance to relax with fellow seminar students in tranquil Ocean Grove, NJ.
• Free time on the weekends can be spent at the beach, exploring the charming hamlet of Ocean Grove, hopping a train to nearby New York City, and of course, playing marimba!
An extremely wide range of information is presented—acoustics, history, Baroque performance practice, tone production, articulation, etc. That is why so many past students claim that the LHS Summer Marimba Seminar was the best educational experience of their lives and that they learned more in those three weeks than in three years at college.

The details:
• Course includes a complete overview of the marimba with the first week concentrating on technique and the second two weeks concentrating on musical issues and repertoire.
• Marimbists must arrange to bring a marimba frame and keyboard (without resonators). A few rental instruments are available for overseas applicants.
• Applicants must have completed their first year of a college music program before participating in the seminar.
• Apply online or by mail: submit an application form, a letter stating the reasons for wanting to attend, a repertoire list, and the full tuition amount. Two letters of recommendation are also required. Apply Here
