Marimba

A gripping, emotional piece for solo marimba that will captivate everyone who listens.

A variety of textures, including four-mallet chorales, single line melody, and even minimalism are present in this work for four mallets. The mature player will be able to musically connect the contrasting sections, to form an exciting recital piece. A 4.3 marimba is required.

Simple and short (142 measures), yet beautifully written. 5.0 octave marimba required.

“The variety of materials in each section make this a worthy composition, which is well within the level of an advanced high school or young undergraduate student.”-Percussive NotesThe composer’s taste for consonance and dissonance is evidenced by his playful bantering between pentatonic, chromatic, minor and major. Agogic and dynamic accents enhance colorful pops of dissonance that permeate the otherwise tonal realm and contribute to the intensity and forward movement. This piece ends where it began, with a finishing touch.

This solo piece is an exploration of the marimba’s unique sound. Can be played on a 4.3 marimba, but there is an optional ending requiring a 5.0.

An accessible 5-ocatave marimba solo, Schism is a lovely and haunting reflection on the loneliness of separation.The materials in the solo will require a mature performer. However, they are so well presented that the solo will work well for the serious undergraduate student.- Percussive Notes

The 1st-place winner in the 2010 PAS composition contest for marimba/cello duo.Its programmatic title references a 1957 aquarium product that was originally called “Instant Life” because it was a species of brine shrimp that, when released int water, emerged from their cryptobiotic state and became “alive.” The first movement of this work is titled “Cryptobiosis” and the second, “Instant Life.”
