Anubis is inspired by the ideas of Egyptian music and mythology, but I certainly make no claims that it is an authentic representation of Egyptian music. In fact, the sound of the piece is probably inspired more by the music of epic motion picture soundtracks than the traditional music of Egypt. There is, however, a traditional Egyptian folksong contained within Anubis. I learned the song, Salma ya Salama, from my friend and teacher Halim El-Dabh. A second version of Anubis exists for solo marimba and percussion ensemble.
