Barrett Hipes

Barrett Hipes is a prominent figure in arts and music education, currently serving as the Vice Provost and Dean of Student Development at The Juilliard School. He plays a central role across a spectrum of student-focused areas: Student Affairs, Residence Life, International Advisement and Student Diversity Initiatives, Academic Support and Disability Services, Community Engagement, Career Services, and Health and Counseling Services.

Hipes is a percussionist by training, originally from Arkansas. He holds a B.M. from the University of Arkansas, an M.M. from Rutgers University, and earned his D.M.A. from the CUNY Graduate Center in 2017. He began his Juilliard career in Residence Life (around 2008), then moved into Career Services—coaching students and alumni, managing off-campus concerts, and offering professional guidance—before helping to launch and now lead the Alan D. Marks Center for Career Services and Entrepreneurship.
