Grace Brown

Grace Brown (b. September 25, 1951, St. Paul, Minnesota) is an American composer known for her rich contributions to percussion music, especially works for marimba and mixed ensembles.

She studied at the University of Arizona, receiving her Bachelor of Music in 1981. Her style is marked by lyrical textures and thoughtful harmonic writing, often blending flowing melodies with rhythmic clarity.

One of her best-known works is Neptune, a three-movement duet for flute and marimba, which features accessible marimba writing that doesn’t require extended techniques and can be played on a 4.6‑octave instrument.

Besides “Neptune,” she has also composed other percussion ensemble works, and her music is published and performed widely in educational settings.
