Born and raised in Houston, Texas, James Morton began his musical journey in early adolescence, playing piano, guitar, and drums—all without formal lessons. His intuitive grasp of musical patterns and rhythm shaped his early development. -

Since 1980, Morton has written instructional drum content for Mel Bay Publications, producing foundational works such as You Can Teach Yourself Drums, Easiest Drumset Book, Easy Rock Drum Charts, Killer-Fillers, Rock Studies for Drumset, Jazz & Rock Beats for the New Drummer, Hot Drum Grooves Made Easy, Fusion Drum Styles, and more. -
Teaching & Educational Outreach
