Nathaniel Bartlett

Nathaniel Bartlett (b. 1978, Madison, Wisconsin) is an American composer, marimbist, and performer recognized for blending acoustic percussion with electronic sound technologies. He performs on five-octave marimbas integrated with custom computer systems, creating immersive, spatialized sound environments.

Bartlett studied with Leigh Howard Stevens, earned degrees from the Eastman School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music (London), and completed his doctorate in composition at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His compositions and arrangements include works for solo percussion, chamber ensembles, and electronics, often exploring real-time notation, spatialization, and extended acoustic techniques.

Notable works include Microseism for percussion and electronics and his marimba arrangement of Bach’s Sonata in D Minor. Bartlett has also released recordings such as Precipice, which showcase his innovative integration of marimba performance and electronic sound. His contributions have made him a leading figure in contemporary percussion performance and composition.
