NEXUS

NEXUS is a world-renowned percussion ensemble based in Toronto, founded in 1971. Known for their virtuosity and innovation, they have earned glowing praise: The New York Times dubbed them “the high priests of the percussion world,” and composer Steve Reich called them “probably the most acclaimed percussion group on earth.”

The ensemble debuted with an entirely improvised concert in 1971. Original members included Bob Becker, Bill Cahn, Michael Craden, Robin Engelman, Russell Hartenberger, and John Wyre (with some lineup changes over the years)

NEXUS is celebrated for their eclectic repertoire—from novelty ragtime xylophone music and world percussion traditions to contemporary classical compositions and free improvisation. They’ve commissioned works from notable composers like Toru Takemitsu, Steve Reich, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, and collaborated with ensembles like Kronos Quartet and Canadian Brass. They’ve also recorded soundtracks, including the film The Man Who Skied Down Everest and the National Film Board documentary Musicanada.

They were the first Western percussion group to perform in the People’s Republic of China, and have toured extensively across all continents—appearing at prestigious venues and festivals including multiple performances at Carnegie Hall, BBC Proms, Kennedy Center, Tanglewood, Ravinia, and others. NEXUS has been inducted into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame (1999) and the CBC In Concert Canadian Musician Hall of Fame (2019). Their accolades include the Banff Centre National Award and the Toronto Arts Award.
