David Kovins

David Kovins, vibraphonist, marimba-player and drummer, owns The School for Musical Performance, which he founded in 1980. His performances are widely regarded as dynamic and memorable, his teaching approach exemplary. He makes the musical dreams of his many accomplished and admiring students come true. Past students have gone on to have successful, notable musical careers performing with Alicia Keys, Yolanda Adams, Jay-Z, Eminem, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and in Broadway shows. David earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in performance from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music. He also has done extensive work at The Lighthouse, teaching percussion to the blind. Kovins spearheads his own vibraphone-based group, performing and recording in New York. His CD, Vibe From New York, has won acclaim both critically and commercially. He has written five instructional books for vibraphone and marimba, a percussion ensemble with vibraphone solo and vibraphone/marimba duet, published by the venerable Warner Brothers and Hal Leonard, among others. His mesmerizing performances can be viewed on Utube searching under his name. Some of his most memorable work has been heard in Broadway shows, cabarets and during a growing number of performances with celebrities such as Wayland Flowers, pianist Jordan Rudess, violin virtuoso Yura Alexov -- as well as with dance companies such as Jerome Robbins'.
