Stephen Ridley

Stephen Ridley is a composer and orchestrator based in Los Angeles. His music features niche percussion instruments and electronics, blended with the traditional orchestra. Stephen did his graduate work at UCLA, where he was a student of Jerry Goldsmith.

Shortly after grad school, Stephen was selected to underscore Disney/ABC’s Academy Awards Promo campaign, a project which was helmed by director John Singleton. Since then, he’s created string and percussion scores for indie feature films, shorts and television, including projects for HBO, MGM, and Fox Singapore.

Stephen is also active in the world of concert and academic music. His works for percussion are published by Keyboard Percussion Publications, Mile9 Music and C. Alan Publications. His works Meteor, pitch/pulse and Animism for Prepared Timpani and Tape have enjoyed many performances, both domestic and international. Notable performances have taken place at NYU, UCLA, PASIC, Bands of America nationals, TMEA and Drum Corps International.

This piece attempts to create a kind of wavering sustain by tasking each marimba with a similar-but-different part in the same register. That sound inspired the name of the work. The title is also meant to hint at the two most important musical forces in the piece: meters and mediants.
