(Based on music from George Gershwin’s Opera Porgy and Bess. Used with permission of Warner/Chappell Music) One of the most respected of American composers, Samuel Adler was on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music for many years. This work was commissioned by Leigh Howard Stevens to be a full-fledged concert work in its own right – not merely a medley of tunes from the opera. The “A” material of the rondo is the famous xylophone orchestral excerpt from the overture, now arranged and expanded for four-mallet marimba!
