William Cahn joined the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra as principal percussionist after graduating form the Eastman School of Music in 1968.

Night Ride was completed in August 2005. It was composed for and is dedicated to Kazunori Meguro and the students at Showa Academy of the Arts in Atsugi, Japan. The music is scored for timpanist and four percussionists playing two marimbas, a vibraphone, tuned gongs, a glockenspiel and a suspended cymbal.

An ode to those who ride the night:

Imagination shines their light,

A torch that renders darkness bright,

Revealing wonders through its might.
