Lights of the Forest is a loosely programmatic piece. It is inspired by a series of images of light in a forest: the setting sun through the trees, a campfire of a traveler, the glowing eyes of a predator, the glow of bioluminescent life forms, stars peering through the boreal canopy, first light as night recedes.”I really enjoyed this piece for its complexity of techniques, orchestration, and level of difficulty.”-Percussive Notes

Old Man Jazz was composed (both music and lyrics) by Gene Quaw, and published in 1920 by Jos. W. Stern & Co. The original sheet music has the subtitle “An Eccentric Fox Trot Song.” The All Star Trio (George Hamilton Green, xylophone, F. Wheeler Wadsworth, tenor saxophone, and Victor Arden, piano) recorded a very clever version of the piece for Victor Records (#18699) in 1920. This transcription arrangement is based on the All Star Trio recording, with reference to the original sheet music.

A traditional Japanese lullaby, arranged for alto saxophone (who also plays tam -tam), marimba (4 mallets) and percussion (crotales or glockenspiel, wood block, and triangle). ‘Ora No Omboko’s’ delicate textures and haunting melodic material make a lovely change of pace for any performance situation. The piece also provides excellent small ensemble experience for the intermediate marimbist and percussionist.
