Incoming is a virtuosic composition for the two players, using the drumkit as a multiple percussion instrument. The drummer has the opportunity to improvise in different sections of the work, and requires the ability to solo in different and changing meters.

This piece attempts to create a kind of wavering sustain by tasking each marimba with a similar-but-different part in the same register. That sound inspired the name of the work. The title is also meant to hint at the two most important musical forces in the piece: meters and mediants.

The music is very dance-like in quality, going over and over through mostly the same sequence of harmonies while melodic variations are developed. The melodic ideas become more and more like a bird (or flute) singing as the work progresses.
