The ultimate “magical marimba moment” happened in the late 1980s when I was asked by my then record label, Music Masters, to “go back into the studio” and record another Bach Sonata, so that they could release my LP, “Bach on Marimba” in the new format of the day, Compact Disk.

For this recording of the Bach Mini Suite, I worked with audio engineering guru Randy Crafton, who in addition to his extensive professional credentials as an engineer, is a “recovering marimbist” who had studied with me in the 1980s.  As if that weren’t enough synergistic alignment of the planets, Randy had years of experience performing in the percussion section of the Albany Symphony, whose “home base” was the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall.  There isn’t any audio engineer who knows the sound of the marimba and the unique pleasures and challenges of TSBMH better than Randy.
