The Rivers Music School in Boston commissioned this piece for the 22nd Annual Seminar on Contemporary Music for the Young. It was composed with an advanced young player in mind, but is musically sophisticated enough to be performed by college level players also.

The music is very dance-like in quality, going over and over through mostly the same sequence of harmonies while melodic variations are developed. The melodic ideas become more and more like a bird (or flute) singing as the work progresses.

David Steinquest, composer of the now-classic intermediate marimba solo, ‘Meditation and Dance’, has displayed his considerable compositional skills in a marimba duet. In three movements, ‘Jig’, ‘Ballad’, and ‘Country Dance’, the ‘Suite’ is definitely “listener-friendly” and should prove to be a popular addition to the marimba duet repertoire.

This is a very interesting and satisfying work for marimba and piano which was originally written for marimba and strings. The development of the musical material is beautifully controlled and the marimba part is challenging but completely idiomatic.
